Troop 457 Training Information

 

Y01 - Youth Protection Training (YPT)

 

Virtus (Through Archdiocese of Washington)

 

N06 - CPR/AED

  • Required for: At least 1 adult on every trip (preferably 2)

  • Recommended for: All adults and older scouts

  • Time Commitment: ~4 hours

  • Expires: After 2 years

  • Course offered by the Troop every 6-8 months

    • Also available at Goshen, as part of Wilderness First Aid, and from various non-BSA sources

 

N02 – Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

  • Required for: At least 1 member of every High Adventure crew (preferably 2)

  • Recommended for: All adult backcountry trip leaders

  • Time Commitment: 1 weekend

  • Expires: After 2 years

  • In person or online: Offered at Goshen during the summer and at Camp Snyder in the Fall and Spring

 

Position-Specific Training

S24 – Scoutmaster Specific Training

  • Required for: Scoutmaster/ASM to be considered Trained

  • Time Commitment: ~8 hours

  • Expires: Never

  • In person or Online: In person

  • Alternative: Online Scouts BSA Scoutmaster Training

 

S11 – Intro to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS)

  • Required for: Scoutmaster/ASM to be considered Trained

  • Time Commitment: 1 Weekend or 3 days while at Goshen

  • Expires: Never

  • In person or Online: In person w/ overnight camping

 

WS81/SCO_800 - Weather Hazards

  • Required for: Scoutmaster/ASM to be considered Trained

  • Time Commitment: 30 minutes

  • Expires: After 2 years

  • In person or Online: Online

 

WS10 - Troop Committee Challenge

  • Required for: Troop Committee members to be considered Trained

  • Time Commitment: ~3 hours

  • Expires: Never

  • In person or Online: In person

  • Alternative Online Scouts BSA  Troop Committee Training

 

D76 - Merit Badge Counselor Training

  • Required for: MB Counselors to be considered Trained

  • Time Commitment: ~1 hour

Guide to Safe Scouting

 

SSD - Safe Swim Defense

  • Required for: Adult leaders supervising any swimming activity

  • Time Commitment: ~30 minutes

  • Expires: After 2 years

  • In person or Online: Online

 

SA - Safety Afloat

  • Required for: Adult leaders supervising boating, canoeing, tubing, kayaking, etc. activities (exception is large commercial vessels)

  • Time Commitment: ~20 minutes

  • Expires: After 2 years

  • In person or Online: Online

 

Drive Safely

  • Recommended for: All scouting activity drivers

  • Time Commitment: ~1 hour

  • Expires: ??

  • In person or Online: Online

 

S74 - Climb on Safely

  • Required for: Adults leaders who supervise climbing activities

  • Time Commitment: ~ 20 minutes

  • Expires: After 2 years

 

S76 - Trek Safely

 

Supplemental Training

 

Backcountry Outdoor Leadership Skills (BCOLS)

 

University of Scouting

  • Recommended for: Any interested adult leader

    • Curriculum includes a wide variety or training courses from beginner to advanced (quality is hit or miss depending on instructor)

    • Register early if interested

  • Time Commitment: 1 day per degree

  • Expires: Never
